21st Century, Taking a Stand

"Freedom of expression is the foundation of human rights, the source of humanity, and the mother of truth". This quote shows the importance of human freedom in the world. Without freedom there can't be an utopian society where everyone is happy and peaceful. This quote is spoken by Liu Xiao Bo. Liu Xiao Bo is a poet, writer, professor, and human rights activist in China. Liu Xiao Bo is currently is categorized as a political prisoner in China and he was sentenced 11 years of imprisonment and 2 years of deprivation of political rights on 25th December 2010. He fought hard for freedom of China.

Freedom is indeed a hard thing to fight for, but it's worthy fighting for it. Freedom is important to fight for because without freedom, in society and world, the people will go against their government or leader. Freedom is not something that anybody can be given, freedom is something to have. It's a simple and basic right that everyone should have. But, sadly some of the people don't have the right of freedom legally. Liu Xiao Bo took part in a student protest 1989 June 4. Students were protesting against the government about the material law. Liu Xiao Bo tried to stop them by doing a hunger strike with three of his colleagues lasting three days on 2 June, to earn the trust from the students. He and his colleagues succeeded to negotiate with both of the student leaders and the army commander to let the several thousand students leave completely from the Square, avoiding any possible killing. But, shortly after that he was imprisoned for supporting the student protest. Even though Liu Xiao Bo knew that it was a risk and dangerous for him to help the students, he still fought for freedom and by that he saved Tian An Men square being filled with blood. By his action, he showed that freedom is worth fighting for no matter what including taking risk. Most of the people are scared to fight , but a lot of people are fighting for human rights and freedom and they always take risks with them while fighting for it.

Additionally, it is important to fight for justice and for the better of society. Society is where people live, and it's their haven, and in order to create a utopian society it requires justice. Justice is the most basic characteristic of utopian society, but it's also one of the most important characteristics. Liu Xiao Bo fought for freedom which is fighting for justice. Liu Xiao Bo also wrote about Chinese government and criticized them. He was one of the writers for Charter 08. Charter 08 is a book signed by over 350 Chinese human rights activists. It was published on 10 December 2008, the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human rights. But Liu Xiao Bo was taken away to prison by the police on 8 December 2008, just two days before the Charter 08 was published. Later, on 23 December 2009 Liu Xiao Bo was sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment and two years of deprivation of political rights. Even though Liu Xiao Bo knew what he was doing was risky and in the end he did end up in prison because of it, he still fought for and thought that it is worth a sacrifice for China's freedom and justice. Those characteristics are the most important thing that creates an utopian society.

Not only did China respond very seriously about his matter, the world was also responding seriously to that matter. Lawyers, and human rights activists wrote essays and letters regarding the release of Liu Xiao Bo. And Liu Xiao Bo won the Nobel Peace Prize on 2010 while he was in jail imprisoned. As you could see in the image above Liu Xiao Bo wasn't present for the award because, Chinese government didn't let Liu Xiao Bo to collect his award and his chair was empty. I think that it is really taking a big risk to himself and his family members by walking on the path to fight for justice and freedom. And taking a risk isn't a easy thing to decide, because it could kill or harm himself. His bold and strong decision is helping out people to have right and stand up for justice.

If Liu Xiao Bo didn't fight for justice and human rights China's citizens will be suffering even more. Without Liu Xiao Bo China would be a dystopian society. Liu Xiao Bo's mind and feeling toward the citizens of China are very strong. He is taking risk that led him to grave danger. It is inspirational, because of his idealism towards a utopian society(China). He's ideals is not only giving hope to the citizens of China but, everyone who's suffering. If the government keep Liu Xiao Bo, protests against them will grow and at last, something tragic will happen. Liu Xiao Bo is a hope but if the government imprison Liu Xiao Bo the mind of people will turn to anger and the connection of a country and the civilians is going to crash and it will take centuries to connect it again. Liu Xiao Bo knows that it is worth fighting for justice an freedom. Liu Xiao Bo, he is a hero that takes a stand in 21st century.
